In the area

Gascony, whilst very rural, offers many interesting old bastide towns to be explored, sports activities, local bespoke festivals and specialist museums. Here are some of the nearest and our favourites.

Markets

There are almost daily fruit and vegetable markets selling local seasonal produce and other local delights such as wine, armagnac, cheese, duck, garlic. In the summer months there are also night markets with food stalls, music and drink throughout the village.

Wine tasting

There are several vineyards to be visited but our favourite (it’s practically organic, in a very beautiful setting, and is run by lovely people) is Domaine d’Arton.

2

Kayaking

A two hour meandering kayak down a local river, in the shade of trees and spotting wildlife.

Walks

There are walks directly from Amassa across fields, woods and secluded hamlets, and marked walks further away. The old pilgrimage route of Santiago de Compstella passes nearby in Lectoure.

4

Museum

The Honey Museum in nearby Gramont and celebrates the lifecycle of the remarkable life of bees, and sells wonderful local honey produce. A firm family favourite.

Find out about woad, one of the plants that provides blue pigmentation extracted from its leaves, for dying, painting and other processes at the museum Bleu de Lectoure.

5

Cycling

Fancy the Tour de France? The Pyrenees are about two hours away by car however, more locally there are marked cycle routes for cyclists who want to explore the area by bike. We have several bicycles at Amassa for you to use (not racer bikes!).

6

Spa

Lectoure, about 20 minutes away, is an old thermal town still used for its spa facilities and curative properties. A trip to this small but relaxing spa is great for anyone. They also have a sauna and hammam.
